Is Crowdsourced Warfare Taking Flight?
The age of expensive hardware is fading; the future of war may be cheap, agile, and crowdfunded.
The Ukrainian government has just rolled out a smartphone app that morphs together gaming, crowdfunding, and frontline warfare. Supporters can now donate directly to elite Ukrainian drone units, track their missions, and even earn points and merit badges for contributions.
It marks more than a fundraising gimmick, it’s a potential step change in how modern conflict is financed and fought. By giving ordinary citizens the ability to choose units, send money, and follow real-time updates from the front, Ukraine is effectively democratising elements of the battlefield. Technology now has the power to transform warfare into something more decentralised and participatory.
