Donald Trump has landed in Britain. London’s decision to roll out the red carpet again says less about genuine affection for the man than about calculation—a charm offensive aimed at keeping an unpredictable partner appeased while safeguarding the UK’s strategic interests. No other U.S. president has ever been granted two full state visits to the United Kingdom.

A Carefully Choreographed Welcome

The visit will be anchored at Windsor Castle and—tellingly—will remain largely within its walls, shielded from the British public, who have already projected images of Trump and Jeffrey Epstein onto the castle’s exterior. Public opinion is sharply divided: many remain vehemently opposed to Trump, yet a growing number are beginning to subscribe to Trumpism and the MAGA movement. What once seemed fringe is evolving into a credible groundswell within British politics and can no longer be dismissed outright.

Inside Windsor, the King, Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales will host the Trumps, offering the pageantry of carriage processions, guards of honour, and the obligatory royal banquet in the State Dining Room. Such ceremony flatters Trump’s ego and provides him with the validation to showcase at home—proof, in his telling, that he commands respect on the world stage. For the British establishment, the imagery of Trump alongside Charles and William projects continuity and unity. Yet attempts to “domesticate” the world’s most volatile populist within the gilded confines of monarchy carry reputational risks. For now, however, the political calculus tilts towards bearing those risks in the hope of preserving strategic support from Washington.
